Sclater Architects is an award-winning full service architectural design and planning firm with more than 30 years of experience across a diverse range of projects. Our results-driven, collaborative process unites the resources that can deliver successful projects for our clients, create remarkable spaces for our communities, and design the connections that truly matter. We look forward to learning how we can help you.
Originally founded in Los Angeles in 1935, the firm opened a Seattle office in 1973. In 1980, Alan Sclater took over direction of the Seattle office, which was renamed Sclater Architects in 1997.
The firm has been involved from its earliest days in a wide variety of projects across the country, including much of the nation’s early retail development. Today, our range of work includes everything from retail centers, office buildings, and hotels to residential, mixed-use projects, educational facilities, tenant improvements, and more. In each project, a comprehensive process and the careful consideration of the people who will use it—including the ways they will interact with it—allows us to produce not only functional spaces, but also economically successful investments and award-winning results.

Sclater Architects does not promote a particular style of architecture—rather, we believe that each project can and should develop its own personality through a thoughtful design process, in turn informing the “right” architecture. And while architecture traditionally is often critically observed by only a few, we strive to include a variety of input during design. That process begins with a response to each client’s unique requirements—their desired purpose, image, and context for the building—and extends to the physical site conditions and features, energy needs, and appropriate building systems and materials. These are the driving forces behind each design decision we make.
When you choose Sclater Architects, you enter into a dialog. For your handpicked team of designers, project managers, specialized consultants, and engineers, every project is an opportunity to engage in meaningful client interaction and involvement, particularly during the early planning and design phases. Time and time again, this kind of collaborative environment—where our clients sit with us as an invaluable part of the team—proves to be a place where successful design can flourish.
We believe that how an architecture firm gets involved with its community must go hand-in-hand with its philosophy. For Sclater Architects, reaching out to those who inhabit and use the buildings we create—and the communities around them—is a critical part of how we’re designing connections. By actively participating in a variety of nonprofit organizations, many members of the firm are able to stay deeply linked with the neighborhoods where their designs live.
